Naturopathy was founded on the premise that man and nature are inextricably connected.  It recognized and respected the fact that the human host was the composite of a physical, mental and spiritual existence, that to diminish any one of these would create an imbalance being ultimately expressed in dis-ease, leading to illness.  By recognizing and diagnosing this imbalance and by employing therapeutics derived from nature, these disease processes could be addressed, thereby restoring the affected host to its original homeostatic state.  This understanding is the foundation for the practice of Naturopathy.

Since the advent of its vitalistic philosophy, principles and sciences set forth by its founder, Benedict Lust, M.D., D.C, N.D., in 1896, Naturopathic Medicine has advanced dramatically, embracing modern diagnostic and therapeutic procedures allowing it to address a broad spectrum of health conditions, making it a primary health care choice for those in need of medical care on the same basis as Allopathic and Osteopathic Medicine.

Today, Naturopathic Physicians are considered one of the health care professionals capable of treating the entire being, much like Allopathic, Osteopathic and Chiropractic Physicians.  However, due to their unique medical training, they are extremely well versed in the application of both conventional and natural diagnostic and therapeutic modalities.  Through the use of these modalities it seeks to work with and not against the natural order of things as it relates to the human host and its environment.  Naturopathic Medicine employs all of the natural processes of Nature such as air, water, sun, electrical, and the plant, animal and mineral kingdom in the formulation and application of therapeutic modalities in addition to minor surgery, as well as other "scientific" conventional modalities developed in our modern era.  Today, Naturopathic Medicine offers a modern choice to Americans in need of primary health care intervention and prevention.
